Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and Agriculture in the 21st century for development strategy in the Nigerian economy
Abstract
The paper explores the role of information and communication technology in agricultural development in the 21st century. A definition of the scope of ICT is given to set the pace and it goes on to review the current array of ICT tools and devices. The functions of the various ICT tools are described. The needs of the various stakeholders in agriculture are identified and matched with technologies that can address these needs. A few success stories in the use of ICTs in agriculture from selected African countries are also provided. The paper then ends with a discussion of the need to develop ICT strategies specifically aimed at supporting agriculture and identifies stakeholders who should play lead roles in the development of these strategies.
