Information communication Technology (ICT) compliance among professionals of Nigerian construction industry.

Abstract

Many of the professionals in the Nigerian construction industry are still lagging behind in the adoption of ICT compare with their counterpart in other developing nations of the world despite the globalisation in technological advancement. The research work periscopes the level of usages of ICT within the construction industry with a focus on Quantity Surveyors. The study unveiled the challenges experienced by the professional Quantity Surveyor by x-raying the prospect and hindrances in the usage of ICT within the industry. The research is based on a questionnaire survey designed to gather all necessary information from professional Quantity Surveyors in both consulting and contracting firms. The data collected were subjected to statistical analyses using simple percentile, mean score, and ranking in explaining some of the results. The result showed that the Nigerian Quantity Surveyors has not yet make full use of the ICT and quantity surveying software for quantity surveying tasks. However some challenges to the use of information and communication technology were identified by the quantity surveyors. The one with very strong effect is the high cost of hardware and software including fear of virus attack. The study therefore recommends that the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) should endeavour to organize seminar and workshop to updates the knowledge of their members as regards to information and communication technology. While the government is implored to subsidize the rate at which ICT accessories are acquired in the country. Finally, the Quantity Surveyors should pursue and acquire requisite education and upgrade themselves through training programme to acquire new skills and broaden their knowledge spectrum.
