Environmentally influenced fatigue crack growth in duplex stainless steels-the complications
Abstract
When selecting steels for application in aggressive environments, properties such as resistance to localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking behaviour under internal residual stresses or imposed static loads are considered. However, these properties may not give an accurate picture of performance in situations where cyclic loading is experienced in corrosive environments, i.e. where corrosion fatigue can occur. It is evident that the higher the cost of failure, in economic or safety terms, the greater the incentive to understand and minimize crack nucleation and growth by corrosion fatigue. This paper briefly examines the various factors that must be taken into consideration in selecting duplex stainless steels for these specialized applications.
