Abstract

The study aimed at detecting the prevalence rate of the intestinal parasites of fish sold for consumption in Anguldi Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. Out of the 100 examined samples,41(41.0%) were infected with intestinal parasites, which included the Nematodes, Cestodes and Protozoa .The protozoan parasites observed was coccidia with prevalence of 8(19.5%),the cestodes recovered i.e Pleurocercoid with prevalence of 16(39.0%),while Nematodes detected included Procamillanus spp and Capillaria spp with prevalence rate of 12(29.3%) and 5(12.2%)
out of 41.Fishes with body weight range of 60 to 69kg were more infected and had the highest prevalence rate of 16(74.9%),indcating positive relationship between size and prevalence of infection. There was no  significant difference in the prevalence rate of intestinal parasites, different sexes and parasites encountered in the fishes examined(Clarias gariepinus and Tilapia), P>0.05.The body weight of the fishes was  significantly different to the infection rate.(P<0.05).

Keywords: Intestinal parasites, Nematodes, Cestodes, Protozoa and Pleurocercoid.
