MAIN OUTCOME: The three types of lingual identified in this study dare in agreement with what occurs in many other populations. The absence of the nodular type in Nigeria is also in agreement with results gotten in some other populations.

CONCLUSION: Three types of lingulae; triangular, truncated and assimilated exist in Nigerian mandibles. The lingual is clinically important as a landmark to Dentists and Orthopedic Surgeons who wish to desensitize the inferior alveolar nerves. It could be that the nodular type of lingulae had disappeared in Nigerian angle to the growing literature on non-material variants of the skull
