Pattern Of Occurrence, Management And Prevention Of Trauma In Nigerian Oil Industry

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to review the occurrence, management and prevention of trauma in industry in Nigeria with particular reference to the oil industry.


The type of injuries, their causes and relative frequency in the Nigerian oil industry has been discussed. First aid facilities, evacuation procedures and facilities along with safety aspects of trauma in industry have been highlighted.


METHOD: Records in the Shell Petroleum Development Company hospitals were reviewed and in the 5-year period reviewed there were 2358 trauma cases.


RESULT: 2155 cases (91.4%) were made up of cases of contusions/lacerations/fractures of the upper and lower limbs, burns and blunt/penetrating injuries of the abdomen. 203 case (8.6%) consisted of blunt/penetrating injuries of the chest, head injuries, facial injuries, repetitive trauma injuries, spinal injuries and baro-trauma injuries. There was a preponderance of male over female patients (3.99:1 ratio).


CONCLUSION: 2144 cases (81.62 %) resulted from machinery injuries, road traffic accidents, trips & falls, explosions & fires and armed robbery attacks. 215 cases (18.4%) were caused by use of computers & poor ergonomics, community disturbances, twisting of limbs and travel in unpressurised aircrafts.
