Posterior Hip Dislocation: Need For Prompt Care
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The pattern of posterior hip dislocation seen at our institution between October 1992 and September 2002 To find out how soon the dislocations were reduced, the associated complications and how the injuries occurred.
METHOD: The case files of the patients were retrieved and examined. A total of 18 patients were seen, 14 males, and 4 females.
RESULTS: The injuries occurred following road traffic accidents, frequently head-on collision and involving drivers mostly, 9 (50%). The right hip was more commonly affected. The commonest associated injury was acetabular fracture. 14 cases had correct diagnosis suspected at presentation. The majority (66.7%) were reduced over 12 hours of presentation. This was partly due to lack of funds by the patients.
CONCLUSION: It is recommended that fees be waived for all cases of dislocations allowing full emergency care to be given till the patient is able to make payments, as is done for life-threatening conditions.
