Antibacterial effect of Aframomum meleguata, Xylopia aethiopicum and Ocimum viride
Abstract
Antibacterial effects of the aqueous extracts Aframomiun meleguata, Xylopia aethiopicum and Ocimum viride was tested using the cup plate, disc diffusion and the direct tube method. The effects of the hot and cold extracts of the spices were tested against the activities of Escherichia coli, Streptococcus sp and Staplylococcus aureus. The activities of the 5% (w/v) hot aqueous extract were significantly higher than those of the cold. Combinations of 2.5% [w/v] of any two of the extracts were potent against Staph. Aureus which was relatively resistant to all the individual extracts.
