A toponímia e a diversidade linguística em Moçambique Toponymy and linguistic diversity in Mozambique

Abstract

O presente trabalho pretende discutir a toponímia (do gregos τόπος, "lugar", e ὄνομα, "nome", significando, portanto, "nome de lugar") e sua relação com a diversidade linguística de Moçambique. O pressuposto do presente estudo é de que um país multilingue e multicultural como Moçambique deve ser um espaço para cada língua se manifestar e se ver reflectida na geografia e na história do país em prol da consolidação da história colectiva comum que justifica a partilha do espaço dentro das fronteiras. O presente trabalho não tem a pretensão de esgotar o assunto que se propõe a discutir, mas contribuir para uma reflexão aberta e franca sobre estes dois assuntos, geralmente tabus, no dia-a-dia dos cidadãos, toponímia e diversidade linguística. Em termos de organização, depois da introdução, o estudo apresenta a situação linguística de Moçambique, descrevendo a sua complexidade e focalizando no espaço político e social da língua portuguesa no país. Em seis secções, o texto discute a diversidade linguística de Moçambique contemporâneo e um estudo diacrónico da toponímia que inicia antes da chegada dos estrangeiros até ao presente. O texto apresenta também alguns conceitos básicos através de breves definições. A seguir, apresenta a diversidade linguística de Moçambique com enfoque para a situação da língua portuguesa, seguido de um breve historial da toponímia em Moçambique. Depois, aponta alguns desafios para o Instituto Nacional de Nomes Geográficos de Moçambique (INGEMO) e, finalmente, apresenta algumas conclusões das discussões desenvolvidas ao longo do texto.

English Abstract: The present work intends to discuss toponymy (from the Greek τόπος, "place", and ὄνομα, "name", meaning, therefore, "place name") and its relation with the linguistic diversity of Mozambique. The assumption of the present study is that a multilingual and multicultural country like Mozambique should be a space for each language to express itself and be reflected in the geography and history of the country in order to contribute to the consolidation of the common collective history that justifies the sharing of space within borders. The present work does not intend to exhaust the subject that is proposed for discussion, but to contribute to an open and frank reflection on these two subjects, usually taboos, in the daily life of the citizens: toponymy and language diversity. In terms of organization, after the introduction, the study presents the linguistic situation of Mozambique, presenting a description of its complexity and focusing on the political and social space of the Portuguese language in the country. In six sections, the text discusses the contemporary linguistic diversity of Mozambique and a diachronic study of the toponymy from the period before the arrival of the foreigners to the present. The text also presents some basic concepts in the form of brief definitions. It presents the linguistic diversity of Mozambique with a focus on the situation of the Portuguese language, followed by a brief history of the toponymy in Mozambique. Then, it points out some challenges for the National Institute of Geographical Names of Mozambique (INGEMO) and, finally, presents some conclusions of the discussions developed throughout the text.
