Analysis of the morphometric characteristics and the hydrological behaviour of Alaro River, Ibadan using Geographical Information System
Abstract
The study analyses the morphometric characteristics and the hydrological behaviour of the Alaro River in Ibadan, South western Nigeria using a Geographical Positioning System, Digital Camera and Goegraphical Information System. The data was generated using a topographical map covering the river catchment. Results show that the catchment is a 3rdorder stream that has a low relief terrain, fairly elongated in shape and a long basin length. The basin has a high stream frequency/density, compactness coefficient value, and drainage density indicating it is prone to flooding. The river basin circulatory ratio value is closer to a circle and its form factor is approximately 0.5 for the river. There is a need for monitoring and planning of water resources management in the river basin
