Indications for Upper Gastro-Intestinal Tract Endoscopy in Yola, Nigeria - A 3 Years Audit
Abstract
Background: Oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy is one of the most commonly performed endoscopic procedures. Properly performed, it provides valuable information in the diagnosis of patients with symptoms referable to the upper gastrointestinal tract. Information on the indications for Oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy is scanty in Nigeria particularly from the North-eastern region. This study is aimed to determine the indications for oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy in Yola, Nigeria.
Methodology: This study is a hospital-based retrospective review of the indications for oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy undertaken to cover a three-year period from November 2006 to October 2009. The setting of the study is the Endoscopy unit of Federal Medical Centre, Yola. The endoscopy register was examined over this period. The bio-data and the indications for which patients underwent this procedure was reviewed.
Results: A total of 311 patients had oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy during the period under review. The indication for endoscopy was diagnostic in all the patients. One hundred and thirty-three (133) of the patients were males (42.8%) while 178 were females (57.2%). Dyspepsia was the most common indication for oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy while recurrent anaemia, chronic constipation, and haematochexia, ranked last. Others were upper gastrointestinal tract bleed, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, dysphagia, gastric cancer, recurrent vomiting, gastric outlet obstruction, acute exacerbation of peptic ulcer disease, oesophageal cancer, and excessive salivation.
Conclusion: The commonest indication for oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy in Yola is dyspepsia.
