Generalized peritonitis secondary to a ruptured schistosoma appendix: A case series
Abstract
Schistosoma peritonitis is a rare cause of acute abdomen. Similarly, schistosoma appendicitis is also a rare entity. We present a case series of few patients, who presented with clinical features of generalized peritonitis due to a ruptured appendix. Subsequently, a histopathologic examination revealed schistosoma peritonitis. We had two young patients who presented with clinical features of generalized peritonitis due to a ruptured schistosoma appendix; they were resuscitated, and both had laparotomy with histology of the resected appendix revealing schistosoma appendicitis. We presented this article to highlight the fact that even though rare, schistosomal peritonitis secondary to ruptured schistosoma appendicitis is still possible.
