Academic achievement and self-concept of male and female secondary school students in Gwagwalada Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (fct) Abuja, Nigeria
Abstract
This paper investigated the academic achievement and self-concept of male and female secondary school students in Gwagwalada Area Council of Abuja Federal Capital Territory. Four research questions were raised and four hypotheses were generated and tested to guide the study. Four hundred
respondents were randomly selected for the study. From the data analysis, academic achievement and self concept were discovered to be gender sensitive. The study revealed that male students had higher mean scores in self-concept and academic achievement than the females. However, no significant difference was found between the two groups at 0.05 level of significance. The paper concluded with recommendations that counsellors should be employed and posted to schools to assist students to
achieve better in their academic activities and guide them especially the females to develop positive self-concept.
