The Effect of Two Group Counselling Approaches on The self-concept of Selected Junior Secondary III students
Abstract
Several studies have found a positive correlation between selfconcept
and academic performance. The implication of this finding is that a low self-concept is likely to result in poor academic performance of students. The question is; how can a low selfconcept be improved among students so that high academic achievement can be obtained? This study was therefore designed to investigate if modelling and cognitive disputing group counselling approaches will significantly improve the low self-concept of 120
selected secondary school students. Akinboye\'s (1985) Adolescent Personal Data Inventory (Section A) was used in generating pre-and post-test scores. The ANCOVA and the Duncan Multiple Range Test were used to analyse the generated data. The results of the
study -revealed that the two approaches were effective. It was thus suggested that any of the two group counselling approaches could be used to improve the academic performance of secondary school students with low self-concept.
