Abstract

This study investigated the influence of solo and double parenting on the adjustment problems of secondary school adolescents. Adolescents\' adjustment problems were studied under four groups. These include social, family, personal and academic categories. The sample for the study consisted of 630 adolescents made up of randomly selected 480 adolescents from double parenthood and careful and purposefully selected 150 adolescents from single parenthood. The sample used were selected from ten secondary schools within three randomly selected government areas of Osun State. A questionnaire designated parental influence on Adolescents\' Behaviour Questionaire (PIABQ) was used to collect data. The data were analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test at the 0.05 level of significance. The result indicated that the male and female adolescents from the two types of parenthood adjusted to social problems differently. It was also revealed that the adolescent who are of double parenthood have a positive self-concept. The two different sets of adolescents have the same opinion and feelings about what the composition of their homes should be. Also, it was shown that double - parent homes take care of and have time for their children\'s educational activities while it was the opposite with the single-parent. The findings also pointed to the need for guidance programmes in our schools to consider various problems of adolescents that always emanate from different experience they go through at home.
