Sexual Problems of Nigerian Adolescents and their Implications for Counselling

Abstract

The issue of sexuality among youths is a very delicate one to handle. The matter is particularly crucial at the turbulent adolescent stage when special attention is needed to ensure that the youth does not derail as he/she searches for sexual identity. Thus if youth sexuality is neglected or wrongly approached the consequences may be disastrous. These may include incidence of unwanted pregnancies, psychological problems arising from lack of preparedness for motherhood, child abandonment, high school drop-out-rate and decrease in literacy level. It was discussed that school counselors should introduce sex counselling where discussions would centre on how to minimize the effects of unhealthy sexual behaviour among youths
