Abstract

This study examined how belief system correlates with career aspiration of secondary school students in Ikpoba–Okha Local Government  Area of Edo State. In order to carry out this study, three research questions were raised and one hypothesis formulated and tested at 0.05  level of significance. Correlational research design was used. The population comprised 3000 public secondary school students in  Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. A sample size of 300 students were randomly selected for the study. The instrument used for data  collection was Career Aspiration and Correlates Scale (CAACS) developed by Gregory and O’Brien (2016), adapted and modified by the researchers to suit the present study. The instrument test of reliability yielded a coefficient of 0.96 and 0.84 for belief system and career  aspiration sections respectively. Descriptive statistics of percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to answer research  questions while Pearson ‘r’ was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that the students have  positive belief system with majority of the students having moderate level of career aspiration. The finding also shows that students’  belief system has no significant relationship with career aspiration. It was therefore concluded that belief system has no significant role  to play in their career aspiration. Based on the conclusion, recommendation was made which is; organizing youth programmes such as  career day/workshops to provide adolescents with adequate knowledge on career choice and suitable subject combination.
