Prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus among adult population in a rural community of Delta State
Abstract
Background: The emergence and re-emergence of infectious disease in recent times have necessitated the neglect of noncommunicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.
Aims: The prevalence of hypertension and diabetes among adult population in Obior, a rural community in Delta State was determined.
Materials and Methods: Three hundred and thirty two participants between the ages of 20- 90 years were recruited for the study. This is made up of one hundred and twelve males and two hundred and twenty females. Blood pressure and blood sugar as well as weight and height were measured using standard methods.
Results: The result shows 46% as prevalence of hypertension and 13% for diabetes mellitus while comorbidity was 6%. The male subjects had 7% for diabetes mellitus, 11% for hypertension and 2% were comorbid state. The female subjects had 6% for diabetes mellitus, 35% for hypertension and 4% for comorbidity.
Conclusion: This higher prevalence is due to absence or inadequate presence of health personnel and health education. Health promotion awareness should be step-up in the locality
