Infantile Diabetes Mellitus – A Report of Two Cases from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano Nigeria
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is an uncommon reported problem in Nigerian infants. The age of onset of diabetes mellitus has been noted to be early in black Africans than Caucasians. We present two cases of infant diabetes mellitus which were discovered incidentally in a Nigerian hospital. Both patients presented with diabetic ketoacidosis and were managed successfully. At high index of suspicion is required to detect such cases. We recommend that routine urinalysis should be incorporated into the management of critically ill children.
