Abstract

Penile fracture is a urological emergency with myriad of aetiological factors. This ranges ranging from vaginal intercourse, penile manipulation during masturbation to rolling over an erect penis. The prevalence of penile fractures is 1:175 000 globally. To report the pattern of presentation and management of Penile fractures in a Tertiary Hospital (Rivers State University Teaching Hospital - RSUTH) in southern Nigeria as case series. This was a 10 - year retrospective cross-sectional study of the cases of penile fractures in a tertiary health centre in Southern Nigeria (Rivers State University Teaching Hospital – RSUTH). Ethical clearance for the study was obtained from ethical committee of the Rivers State Hospital Management Board. The information was analysed using SPSS version 25. Eight patients had penile fractures under the period of review. The age range was between 24 years and 32 years. Seven (87.5%) of the patients were married while 1patient (12.5%) was single. Trauma of the penile shaft occurred while 7 (87.5%) of the subjects engaged in sex with commercial sex workers and 1 patient (12.5%)had sex with his spouse. All the patients were verbally referred. Two (25%) of the patients were above 30 years old. The time of occurrence of trauma to presentation was between 1 hour and 102 hours. They all had successful repairs and were discharged postoperatively. There were 8 cases of penile fracture from our study. The commonest cause was coitus following the use of enhancement medications. Majority of the patients were under 30years old. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is necessary for a good prognosis.
