Atypical Diabetes

A Ipadeola

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease with increasing prevalence. The classification of diabetes mellitus has continued to evolve over the years. Despite these continual modifications, some types of DM do not fit into the well known classes. This is because their mode of presentation and clinical course differ from the general trend for the clearly defined classes. Atypical diabetes (ADM) now known as ketosis prone diabetes (KPD), typifies this kind of group with presentation and clinical course not in keeping with classical type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus. At presentation, these patients are thought to have type 1 DM due to the acute manner in which they present with ketoacidosis but insulin treatment may not be required in their long term management. Correct and early identification of persons with ADM is important to guide in educating such persons and with institution or discontinuation of insulin as necessary.
