Economics of Millet Production in Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study examined the economics of millet production in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State. A multistage random sampling technique was employed to select 120 respondents for the study. Data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire and analyzed using frequency distribution, means and gross margin analysis. The average age of the farmers was 46 years with the highest proportion (45.0%) within the age range of 30 - 40 years. Majority were males (78%) and married (63%). Their mean household size was 5 persons, while the highest proportion (41%) had primary education. About 38.3% of the farmers had between 21 and 30 years of millet farming experience, while majority (58%) were non-cooperators. Their mean annual income was ₦76,853.00 per farmer with a cumulative gross margin of N3, 260,544.00. The study recommended policies that will promote increased millet production in the country, especially among the youths.
