Professional challenges in the digital age
Abstract
The challenges the digital age posses to professionals are examined. Exclusive custody of information has given way to easy access via a combination of media for both educational and recreational advancement. Time has enhanced roles to enable Librarians teach information users who can act independently. Library staff no longer need to work in isolation in the technical department but now co-operate with ISP, programmers and others to enable users find information. Steps on meeting these professional challenges were discussed. The necessity for the retraining of librarians with a view of imparting current skills by restructuring library school curricula with emphasis on computer literacy is visited. This is to be followed by continued education while on the field.
