Abstract

Modern-day organizational survival and growth are largely dependent on the viability of the information security system. Thus, suitable conservation and preservation of information resources are required in our 21st-century library practices. The importance of electronic-based security seems not to be given the desired attention in academic libraries especially those in Africa most especially in Nigeria. Hence, issues and reports of loss of information resources, as well as compromise of subscribed databases in academic libraries, still abound in library literature. It is upon this premise that this opinion paper investigates the significance of the use of outmoded and electronic security methods for information resources security in academic libraries. In our 21st century era, and as information needs increase, the necessity to introduce and offer adequate and reliable security systems become very essential in academic libraries. The study identified several available information resources in academic libraries, as well as described how best to preserve information resources in modern-day academics using outmoded and electronic measures. The study also looked at some important concepts concerning information resources’ safety, qualities of decent safety processes using outmoded and electronic methods, as well as discuss the benefits of safeguarding and preserving information resources in libraries. The study finally spotted issues regarding effective security practices and processes in academic libraries and how to provide adequate and reliable remedies to the identified security issues in modern time academic libraries. The paper concluded by recommending an appropriate funding system and provision of all necessary resources for library security in academic libraries.
