Stocktaking and weeding in academic libraries: Experiences from Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Abstract

Weeding is often an emotionally charged topic for both librarians and faculty. However, a print collection needs weeding in order to be stronger and more relevant. Librarians overwhelmingly believe that weeding increases the use of books and patron satisfaction. This paper presents an overview of stock taking and weeding as obtained in Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile -Ife. In order to give some insight into the general nature of stock taking and weeding process, various relevant concepts are discussed. The paper discusses the rationale behind stock taking and weeding, the importance of having a weeding policy, reasons librarians may find it difficult to weed a collection, practical information for collection development/ weeding and options for the weeded materials among others are discussed. Factors supporting the development of a weeding program are considered. The paper concludes with current obsolescence practices for weeding and recommendations are made accordingly.
