Applicability of records management practices, policy formulation and implementation in public sector organisations in Nigeria
Abstract
Public sector organisations are usually government-owned enterprises and social entities conforming to people, structures, processes and policies. The public sector organisations in Nigeria have a fundamental responsibility in terms of the records management practices, policy formulation and implementation in place.
This paper reviewed relevant literature to study the applicability of records management practices, policy formulation and implementation in the public sector organisations in Nigeria. It discussed records management practices as it relates to records creation or receipt, records maintenance and use, destruction or disposition as postulated in the records life cycle.
The paper submitted that records management practices, policy formation and implementation are key for effective and efficient services delivery by the public sector organisation. Where, the benefit of records management practices and policy formation and implementation will include; improved decision-making processes; enhanced service delivery, businesses and other Government entities; accountability and transparency in management processes, improved and integrated communication in Government; reduced operating costs; compliance with the provisions of legislative and regulatory frameworks underpinning records management practices; efficiency and effectiveness in the management of the public sector organisations among others.
The recommendations, limitations and suggestions for future research were in line with the public sector organisations in Nigeria.
