Ibn Surayj’s Ijma’a’ Through His Book “The Deposits for the Texts of the Shari’a” (Collectively)
Abstract
This study aims to demonstrate the interest of Muslim theologians in the history of Ijma (consensus). It addresses the significance of this research and its characteristics, the concept of Ijma and its binding force, the biography of the diligent Imam Ibn Surayj Al-Shafi’i (d. 306 H), and his status among Islamic jurisprudence scholars, particularly within the Shafi’i school. The study also highlights the importance of his book "Al-Wadaa'ee' Limanṣūṣ Al-Sharaa'ih," presenting 98 related Ijma from his book after induction and classifying them according to Islamic jurisprudence categories. This classification aids in understanding Ijma positions, helping students grasp the issue and avoid objections to settled Ijma matters. Scholars view knowledge of Ijma positions as essential for Ijtihad (reasoning effort).
