The Alphabets of Arabic Letters between Translation, Arabization, and Science Fiction

Rawad Alhashmi

Abstract

This study focuses on the importance of developing the Arabic scientific language to keep pace with technological progress through the  reliance on the creative power of science fiction in fostering new innovations supported by translation and Arabization. Furthermore, patents and the use of Arabic naming conventions are key steps for advancing the Arabic language in the technological age. Despite the limited innovations in the Arab world and heavy reliance on Western technology, investing in science fiction and imagining sophisticated future technologies, combined with support for scientific research, can provide the resources necessary to promote the growth of the  Arabic language. Science fiction plays a crucial role in developing the scientific Arabic language—not merely as a genre that imagines  time travel, but as a medium to accelerate the future into the present by inventing what can be imagined, separate from speculation or  myth. Thus, the relationship between science fiction and Arabic scientific language should not be dismissed as mere fiction but rather  seen as essential to advancing Arabic’s role in the global technological space. In this paper, I aim to provoke scholarly discussions on  promoting Arabic as a vital tool for future innovations through the synergy of science fiction, translation, and Arabization.
