Abstract

The mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of the HIV/AIDS is the main way of contamination in children in developing countries
Objective: To assess the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programme’s results at Kara teaching hospital (CHU-Kara).
Methods: It was about a retrospective descriptive study from July 2005 to June 2009 using mothers and children registers and files in PMTCT. Parents’ HIV serologic screening, mothers’ preventive care, children’s alimentation and their HIV serologic status have been evaluated.
Results: Out of 3031 pregnant women attending prenatal care, 2723 (89,84 %) have undergone HIV testing with an average HIV1 seroprevalence of 9, 62 %. Spouses proportion whose undertook the counseling varies from 1,54 to 4,72%. Out of 152 infants of HIV infected mothers, 49,34 % were breastfed, 50,66 % put under replacement feeding; 40,13% of those infants are lost to follow up after their first checking in birth. We recorded tree deaths, two at not breastfed infants. Only 57, out of 97 infants (58,76 %) supposed to have at least one year old, have their serological status known with 14,04% of HIV transmission rate.
Conclusion: Strengthen PMTCT programme’s circuits and true implications of the community are necessary to reduce this high transmission rate.
