Analyse de l’efficacite d’utilisation des ressources en production maraichere en zones urbaine et periurbaine de Parakou au Nord-Benin

Abstract

Le maraîchage constitue actuellement une source non négligeable de revenus et de nutrition des populations urbaines pauvres en  Afrique et plus particulièrement au Bénin. Il est donc nécessaire de suivre les maraîchers afin de les doter de moyens leur permettant d’être efficients. C’est dans ce cadre que la présente étude s’est fixé pour objectif d’estimer l’efficacité technique des maraîchers de la ville de Parakou au Nord-Bénin. Pour atteindre cet objectif, la méthode des frontières de production stochastiques a été appliquée à un échantillon de cent vingt (120) maraîchers choisis de façon aléatoire. Les données sur les caractéristiques démographiques,  socioéconomiques, les quantités des inputs et outputs ont été collectées sur la base d’un questionnaire. Les données ont été analysées avec les logiciels SPSS 20.0, Frontier 4.1 et STATA 10. De l’analyse des résultats, il ressort que les maraîchers opèrent à 55% de leur capacité productive. Ce résultat indique que ces derniers ont encore des possibilités d’accroissement de leur production sans aucun apport supplémentaire d’intrants. Par ailleurs, la taille du ménage, l’accès à la vulgarisation et au crédit sont des déterminants majeurs de l’amélioration de l’efficacité technique des maraîchers. Ces indicateurs doivent être pris en compte pour la pérennité du maraîchage dans la zone d’étude.

English Title: Analysis of the efficiency of use of the resources in market production in urban and peri-urban areas of Parakou in Nord-Benin

Market gardening is currently a significant source of income and nutrition for the urban poor in Africa and more particularly in Benin. It  is therefore necessary to follow the market gardeners in order to provide them with the means enabling them to be efficient. It is in this context that the present study set itself the objective of evaluating the technical efficiency of market gardeners in the city of Parakou in North Benin. To achieve this objective, the stochastic production frontier method was applied to a sample of one hundred and twenty (120) market gardeners chosen at random. Data on demographic, socioeconomic characteristics, quantities of inputs and outputs were collected on the basis of a questionnaire sent. The data were analyzed with SPSS 20.0, Frontier 4.1 and STATA 10. From the analysis of the results, it emerges that the market gardeners operate at 55% of their productive capacity. This result indicates that the latter still have possibilities of increasing their production without any additional input of inputs. In addition, household size, access to extension and credit are major determinants of improving the technical efficiency of market gardeners. These indicators must be taken into account for the sustainability of market gardening in the study area.
