Cycling and woman’s emancipation: a case study of Adama (2017) and The Odds Are Against Cycling (2012) Le cyclisme et l’emancipation de la femme: etude de cas de Adama (2017) et The Odds Are Against Cycling (2012)

Abstract

Throughout world history, there has been a cause and effect relationship between women’s cycling and feminism. The American women's rights activists, Susan Brownell Anthony (1820-1906) and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902), for example, contended that the bicycle has contributed more towards women’s emancipation than anything else in the world. It is also a fact, from the 2010 statistics, that Burkina Faso is the only non-European country where 84 per cent of households own a bicycle. This paper examines the contribution of cycling in women’s emancipation in Burkina Faso, “the country of the two wheels”. Through an analysis of two literary works written by Burkinabe authors, from a feminist perspective, namely Pierre Claver Ilboudo’s Adama (2017) and Noëlie Yaogo’s The Odds are against Cycling (2012), this paper posits that the bicycle is a hard-work training tool which predisposes women cyclists into taking on roles previously reserved to men in society. The bicycle helps housebound women, like the ones in Adama, escape from the house and join the women in Yaogo’s novel who are committed to cycling against the odds for a better future.

Tout au long de l'histoire du monde, il y a eu une relation de cause à effet entre le cyclisme des femmes et le féminisme. Les militantes américaines des droits des femmes, Susan Brownell Anthony (1820-1906) et Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815- 1902), par exemple, ont soutenu que la bicyclette a contribué davantage à l'émancipation des femmes qu'aucune autre chose dans le monde. Il ressort également des statistiques de 2010 que le Burkina Faso est le seul pays non européen où 84% des ménages possèdent un vélo. Cet article examine la contribution du vélo dans l'émancipation des femmes au Burkina Faso, «le pays des deux roues». A travers une analyse, d'un point de vue féministe, de deux oeuvres littéraires écrites par des auteurs burkinabè, à savoir Adama (2017) de Pierre Claver Ilboudo, et The Odds are against Cycling (2012) de Noëlie Yaogo, cet article postule que la bicyclette est un outil d'entraînement qui prédispose les femmes cyclistes à jouer des rôles précédemment réservés aux hommes dans la société. Le vélo aide les femmes confinées à la maison, comme celles dans le roman Adama, à s'échapper de la maison et à rejoindre les femmes du roman de Yaogo qui sont engagées à faire du vélo contre vents et marées en vue d’un avenir meilleur.
