Les missions Chretiennes et l’expansion coloniale Allemande au Sud-Togo (1847-1912)

Abstract

Au Togo, la christianisation a précédé la colonisation. En effet, ce sont les missionnaires protestants allemands qui se signalent très tôt sur la côte du Golfe du Bénin dont celle du futur Togo. Après le début de la colonisation allemande qui commence officiellement le 5 juillet 1884, la présence missionnaire va s'élargir avec l'arrivée des missionnaires catholiques de la Société du Verbe Divin (SVD). Une fois en place, l'Administration coloniale allemande privilégia l'exploitation économique du territoire au détriment de son développement social. Ce domaine a été entièrement pris en charge par Missions chrétiennes qui, en installant de nombreuse écoles confessionnelles concentrées au Sud-Togo pour faciliter la christianisation de la région, ont permis au pouvoir colonial de disposer de nombreux fonctionnaires autochtones subalternes pour la mise en valeur de la colonie. C'est dire que les missionnaires allemands auraient joué un rôle non négligeable dans la colonisation allemande au Togo méridional. Cette étude cherche à faire comprendre le rôle joué par les Missions chrétiennes dans l'expansion coloniale allemande au Togo, particulièrement au Sud-Togo.

English Title: The Christian missions and the German colonial expansion in southern Togo (1847-1912)

English Abstract

In Togo, the Christianization had preceded the colonization. Actually, it was the German Protestants missionaries that showed earlier on the cost of Golf of Benin as well as the one the future Togo. After the beginning of the German colonization which officially started on July 5^th 1884, the missionary presence will be enlarged by the coming of the Catholics missionaries of the Divine Verb Society (DVS). Once settled, the colonial German administration, privileged the economic exploitation of the land regardless to its social development. This field was entirely under the control of the Christians missions whom, installing many confessional schools concentrated in the southern Togo, to facilitate the Christianization of the region, had helped the colonial power to set various assistants natives civil servants for the enhancement of the colony. This is to say that the German had played an important role in the German colonization in the southern Togo. This study wants to high light the role played by the Christian Missions in the German colonial expansion in Togo, particularly in the southern-Togo.
