Abstract

We hereby present a case of situs inversus totalis in a 43 year old immune-compromised female patient referred to the Radiology Dept of the Nigerian Air Force Hospital Makurdi, Benue State, North Central part of Nigeria. Patient was referred for chest x-ray and abdominal ultrasound on a suspicion of mitotic disease. Abdominal ultrasound and chest radiograph revealed transposition of major visceral organs and dextrocardia respectively. (Figures 1-5). An additional abdominal radiograph was obtained to further clarify organs distribution in the abdomen. This case demonstrates typical case of situs inversus totalis and further underpins the relevance of multiple medical imaging techniques in diagnosis. The first-time correct diagnosis of this condition is made has profound implications on the future care and comparative imaging of patients. Finally, the authors canvass for the consistent use of universally accepted imaging protocols, annotations and image orientation, as an important means of correctly identifying situs inversus totalis
