Politics of Fuel Subsidy Regime in Nigeria and Its Implications: An Assessment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration

Abstract

The fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria by President Bola
Ahmed Tinubu’s administration had continued to raise
serious questions and concern among her citizens of its
economic, social and political implications. This study
examined the politics of fuel subsidy regime and its
implications in Nigeria. The study relied on qualitative
approach to gather and analyzed its data. This study
adopted the Neo-Liberalism theory as the theoretical
framework of analysis. The major finding of the study
revealed that fuel subsidy removal had freed up
financial resources for other sectors of the economy.
Other findings are that fuel subsidy removal had
decreased economic growth in the short term;
increased inflation; increase the prices of petroleum
products and loss of jobs in the informal sector. The
study concluded by recommending among others, that
the government should provide critical public
infrastructures and other economic relief programmes
to cushion the adverse effect on individuals and firms
