Problems In The Use Of English As A Medium Of Classroom Instruction
Abstract
The study investigated the problems in the use of English language as a medium of instruction in Aba South Local Government Area. A sample of 1, 200 teachers and students representing 40% of the total population of 3000 teachers and students was selected through the simple random sampling technique. A 2 part instrument A and B was used to collect data for answering the research questions. Simple percentage was used to derive answers to the
research questions. Findings revealed that the mother tongue of both students and teachers interfere with the teaching and learning of English, instructional materials to teach English were lacking and schools library facilities. Among the recommendations made were that regular building workshops should be organized for English language teachers, government
and the school community should work together to provide schools with library facilities.
