Abstract

The perception of home economics students of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku, Rivers State about practical applicability of the course: housing design and management was investigated in this study. Data was obtained from 75 purposively sampled respondents with the aid of structured questionnaire. Data analysis was by the use of frequencies, percentages and chi square. Results of the study reveals that majority of the respondents (68%) were between 20 and 25 years, and most were single ((69.3%). Also 68% of the respondents had urban background, 57.3% lived in double rooms, 53.3% indicated that their parents are civil servants and 84% indicated that their parents were literate. Chi square analysis showed that marital status (X2 =22.017; p= 0.015) and type of house lived in (X2 = 47.187; p= 0.024) have significant relationship with perception about the course: housing design and management, while age, location, occupation of parents, and literacy of parents showed no significant relationship with perception about the course: housing design and management. It was therefore suggested that students should be made to feel the practical impact of the course by encouraging close collaboration with architects, and interior decorators.
