Selected socio-demographic factors affecting involvement of farmers in part-time farming in Emohua, Rivers State

Abstract

The study investigates selected socio-demographic factors affecting involvement of farmers in part-time farming in Emohua, Rivers State. Structured questionnaire was administered to 87 randomly selected respondents who are involved in part-time farming in the study area. Data collected were analysed using frequencies, percentages, means and Pearson correlation. Finding of the study revealed that majority of the respondents are young and within the 25 and 35 years category. Most are married, have large household size and are highly involved in part-time farming. Reasons for involvement given are that they Supplement sources of livelihood, personal interest, to avoid buying foodstuff every time and that it is enjoyable. It was found that age, marital status, household size, gender are positively and significantly correlated with involvement if part-time farming.
