Strategies for enhancing the teaching and learning of technical drawing in technical colleges in Ebonyi State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study evaluated strategies for enhancing the teaching and learning of technical drawing in technical colleges in ebonyi state, Nigeria. Data were collected with the aid of structured interview from twenty technical drawing teachers and 120 technical drawing students in the study area. Data were analysed using mean scores and standard deviation. Findings of the study revealed that the most effective methods used in teaching and learning of technical drawing in technical colleges include field trip method, group method, demonstration method, individual method and project method. It was also found that that for the teachers to be competent in the teaching and learning of technical drawing, teachers must be trained and retrained constantly, attend seminars regularly, improve the present teaching method and teachers experience, also student teacher relationship should be improved or enhanced. The study identified the following as a means of determining the interest of students in technical drawing lessons; giving them assignments, utilization of necessary drawing instruments, asking questions during technical drawing lessons and then students’ cordial relationship with the teacher. Based on the findings of the study recommendations were made thus: Curriculum experts should allocate technical drawing to students in their first year in the technical colleges and secondary schools, so as to familiarize them with the fundamental principle of the subject. Government should endeavour to offer incentives to deserving and willing individual or serving teachers to study technology and vocational education course, to enable sufficient and qualified teachers be produced for effective teaching of technical drawing. Workshops and equipment should be functional in order to sustain the interest of technical teachers. Government should encourage maintenance culture among the teachers and students.
