Socio-Economic Factors Influencing The Failure Of Food Security Policy: Evidence From Delta State, Nigeria

Abstract

Food policy failure would lead to huge losses of government funds and effort, hence this study is justified. This research paper looks into the socio-economic factors (correlates) of food security policy failure with evidence from Delta State, Nigeria. The perceived opinions of 240 respondents on the causes of food policy failure here elicited using the structured questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution and percentages. Such factors as corruption of public officials, over dependence of food imports, government bias for urban sector in the distribution of social infrastructures, inequitable social environment, lack of incentives for private sector participation in food production, conflicts in food policy objectives and unstable political environment, were identified as the major factors++ responsible for the gloomy performance of food policy in the study area. Appropriate recommendations were proffered.
