Rural – Urban Transformation And Social Capital Development: A Case Study Of Central Cross River State

Abstract

The study was designed to examine how rural-urban transformation has impacted on social capital development, considering the current drive by all tiers of government to transform rural areas into semi-urban centers as a way of not only bringing development nearer to the people but also checking the tide of rural-urban migration, which has continued to induce all sorts of socio-economic and political vices in the cities. Using both descriptive and inferential statistics in the analysis of data, the study revealed that such transformation affects the social values, norms and institution of the people in terms of changes in mode of dressing, eroding cultural values, weakening of family ties, save respect for elders, the spirit of handwork, which results in intensive agricultural practices
