Assessment of waste management and control strategies in Katsina Metropolis, Katsina State, Nigeria
Abstract
Waste management and control strategies as practiced in Nigeria urban centres have been a source of great concern due to their effect on health, the environment or aesthetics. This paper focuses on Katsina metropolis, Katsina state. Data for the study was gathered through interview and field work, which was subjected to descriptive statistical analysis in terms of percentages, averages etc. The result reveals that the state environmental agency is trying to ensure waste management and control. But this has not yield the desired outcome. This is due to factors militating against effective waste management in the metropolis such as indiscriminate waste disposal, inadequate waste disposal facilities etc. It is therefore recommended that the capacity of the agency in waste management should be improved and there should be education and awareness amongst the society generally. This will ensure effective waste management control in the metropolis.
