Abstract

The bioavailability of a drug depends on the absorption of the drug, which is affected by its solubility in gastrointestinal fluid and permeability of the drug across gastrointestinal membrane. The rate of drug dissolution though, is greatly influenced by disintegration of the tablet. The need to enhance the dissolution rate of poorly- water soluble drugs led to the introduction of a group of disintegrants known as super- disintegrants. They achieve disintegration faster than the usual disintegrants. This study utilized scientometric analysis (study that can be applied to any discipline to find out its trends and growth of literature) to highlight the most impactful and influential publication sources, most active researchers and institutions as related to various researches into / using Super-disintegrants. 229 bibliographic documents were analyzed. These were obtained from the SCOPUS data base. Data obtained show that India has carried out the most impactful studies as it concerns super-disintegrants. The peak of such research was between the years 2011 - 2015. Scientometric analysis such as this, leads researchers to reliable sources of information. For this particular area of study, it can be noted that there is indeed a need for more collaboration within authors and various institutions involved in such researches.
