Multi-criteria optimization model for engineering design material selection
Abstract
This paper presents a model for material selection for engineering design. Materials play an important role during the entire design process. This method is based on relevant parameters and variable used for the proposed mathematical functions, in obtaining an optimal choice that reflects merits of the entire manufacturing system in order to enhance performance of the design. An objective functions such as cost, density, and young’s modulus etc., as a case study was formulated subject to some constraints (stress, conductivity, thermal expansion, etc.) whose variables are capable of indicating various types of materials that will be used to select an optimal choice of material for an engineering design. A suitable solution in optimizing these set of functions with the material types will be obtained.
