Splenic Abscess Occurring In Two Siblings (A Case Report)
Abstract
Isolated Splenic abscess is rare, with less than 400 cases reported from the beginning of the century until 1986.. Rarer still, is Splenic abscess occurring in siblings, only one case of hepatosplenic infections occurring in two siblings has been reported in the English Literature.
We report two siblings, who presented with clinical features of splenic abscess confirmed by ultrasonography within a period of 8 months from each other. One had splenectomy and the other was treated conservatively with antibiotics and percutaneous aspiration.
Splenic abscess is rare but frequency appears to be increasing with better and accurate diagnostic methods and increasing incidence of immune suppressed states. While no definite common cause was identified in the two siblings, we think multiple factors such as repeated abdominal traumas, malaria and sickle cell trait may be responsible.
