Managing Diabetes Mellitus In A Resource Poor Community

Abstract

Even though the importance of glycated haemoglobin (GHb) as an index of long-term diabetic control has been recognised in the last two decades, it's application in resource – poor centres is still hampered by lack of facilities. While assay methods of GHb that are both available and affordable are awaited, the resort to good clinical assessment remains the most viable alternative. This should be combined with estimations of glucose levels in urine and blood whenever possible. Improved funding of the health sector is advocated.
