Morbidity Pattern Of Diabetic Admissions At The University Of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital
Abstract
Three hundred and twenty-five diabetic patients seen over a 3-year period were retrospectively evaluated. There were 204 males (62.8%) and 121 females (27.2%). Two fifths of the diabetics (130) had various types of complications, the most commonly occurring being leg ulcer with or without gangrene (15.1%), peripheral neuropathy (7.4%), and ketoacidosis (7.1%). There was a low incidence of retinopathy (4.1%), but many of these also had leg ulcer /gangrene. The high incidence of leg/gangrene in diabetics and the possibility of resultant amputation calls for strict and tight control of hyperglycaemia to reduce the risk of development of complications.
Key Words: Diabetes Morbidity, Leg Ulcer/Gangrene. High Incidence.
