Paget's Disease of the Nipple-Areolar Complex at Enugu

Abstract

The records of patients treated for cancer of the breast over a 6-year period the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital were reviewed. The proportion that had Paget's disease of the nipple were isolated and analysed with respect to age, duration of symptoms before presentation, clinical findings and treatment. Out of 291 patients who were treated for cancer of the breast only 9 had Paget's of the nipple, and they were all females aged between 30 and 50 years of age (Mean 38 years) None of them came with the disease localized to the nipple areolar complex alone. Four of the patients had breast masses in addition, while 8 had axillary nodes. Most, delayed for between 5 months to 3 years before presenting. Treat-ment offered comprised mastectomy for all, cytotoxic therapy for 7 patients and radio-therapy for one of the patients. Though they were aged 50 years or below, none of them presented with the very early symptoms of Paget's disease.
