Retinal Changes in Nigerian Diabetics and Mode of Treatment
Abstract
The retinae of 200 randomly selected diabetics attending the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu diabetes clinic between 1989 and 1991 were examined with a Keeler fundoscope in a dark room after maximal pupillary dilation. The findings were analyzed according to the mode of treatment viz insulin treated, diet or tablet treated. There was no statistically significant difference found in the proportions of those with retinal changes amongst those on the various treatment modality when compared. It was found that those on insulin therapy had a male-female ratio of 1.6:1 while those on diet was 0.6:1. The mode of treatment does not seem to have any causative relationship with the presence of retinal changes in the population studied.
