Endometrial Biopsy and Hystopathological Diagnosis - A 10 year Review

FE Iyare

Abstract

Background: Appropriate diagnosis is the mainstay of proper and effective management. For an appropriate histopathological diagnosis to be made, an accurate record of clinical details including sex is essential. The completeness or otherwise of data supplied by clinicians submitting endometrial biopsy specimen was investigated in this study.

Method: A retrospective analysis of request forms of endometrial biopsies submitted at the Morbid anatomy Department of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital from 1981 to 1990 and their histopathological diagnosis.

Results: The age of the patient was not indicated in 50.2% of the request forms, while 7.8% had no clinical history/diagnosis recorded. Of 1,005 infertile patients and 608 with menstrual disorders, only 8.5% had their last menstrual periods or drug history stated on the forms. In those with only infertility as the indication for curettage, only 28% had their last menstrual period state.

Conclusion: Data supplied by many clinicians while requesting for histopathological examination is inadequate. This is likely to affect the accuracy of the histopathological diagnosis.

Key Words: Endometrial biopsy, Histopathological diagnosis, D & C (dilatation and curettage).
