Abstract

Objectives: The antimuscarinic effects of hemicholinium were studied in the rat ileum and bladder using cholinominotics – acetylcholine (Ach) and carbachol in the absence and presence of anticholinesterase agents – edrophonium, diisoprophylphosphoroflouri-date (DFP) and physostigmine.

Method: Isolated preparations of ileum and bladder were made from the Albino rat and set up in an organ bath containing Tyrode solution. Agonists were then added and their action investigated one after the other, first in the absence of an anticholinesterase then in the presence of the anticholinesterase.

Result:

Conclusion: HC-3 has antimuscarinic actions on Ach- and carbacholinduced responses; a post-junctional action at the neuromuscular junction and differing anticholinesterase activities with DFP and physostigmine but not edrophonium.
